E-commerce Stack: Products, Checkout and Cross-Border Trade-offs

Define product modeling, order persistence and cross-border settlement before picking a platform. Reversing the order locks you into someone else's data model.

E-commerce projects most often rework product modeling, where SKUs, variants, inventory and pricing interlock. This list runs data model, checkout chain, cross-border settlement so you clarify your own rules before choosing a platform.

Shortlist(6)

Product model before platform

Write down SKU and variant hierarchy, which dimension inventory decrements on, and whether pricing is fixed or channel-based. Finalize the model before choosing a platform to keep migration cheap.

Orders must be replayable

Snapshot price, discounts, shipping and tax at order time. Orders storing only the final amount cannot explain themselves during disputes.

Cross-border starts with settlement and returns

Multi-currency settlement, exchange-rate timing, duty bearer and return address determine cross-border complexity — usually far harder than storefront presentation.

Common pitfalls

Common traps: inventory and orders double-written inconsistently, discount stacking without precedence, tax rates hardcoded in the frontend, and refunds not restoring inventory.

Alternatives

With few products and simple promotions, a hosted platform plus a few custom pages usually beats building a transaction system.
